COVID-19 UPDATE GROWING TOGETHER THROUGH ISOLATION

I went to the supermarket a few weeks ago.  I was determined to buy the foods I couldn’t get online, or that weren’t already stocked in my freezer.  Unfortunately, the vegetable isle was empty.  First, I panicked, and then I went back to my roots.

4 years ago, I had a crazy thought, “Can I grow enough vegetables in my apartment windows to feed my family?”  Turns out it wasn’t that difficult.  Having little experience, I was able to produce more salad greens, herbs, root vegetables and fruits than I would typically buy over that period.  I admit, there were challenges along the way and there were as many failures as successes (see pest control articles), but it worked.

I enjoyed the process of attaining the skill, but never did I imagine that keeping my family healthy might depend on it.  I never thought about it until I stood in a supermarket staring down an empty produce section and few months in the house.

There aren’t a lot of things we can control right now, and that is scary.  Who would imagine we’d all be working from home, teaching our kids, dealing with illness in ourselves and our families, separated from friends and loved ones, out of work, or out of hope?

You can feed your family.  We can grow together.
